K-Beauty vs Western Skincare: What 259,000 Ingredient Lists Show
How do Korean and Western skincare formulations actually differ? We compared ingredient lists across 259,000 products to find out.
When I started building HadaBuddy's product database, I had a simple goal: make Korean skincare ingredients accessible to English speakers. But as our catalog grew past 250,000 products, something interesting happened. We now had enough data on both sides to answer a question that beauty communities debate endlessly but rarely back up with numbers: how do K-beauty and Western skincare actually differ at the ingredient level?
So I ran the analysis. We compared full ingredient lists across 258,695 products: 60,580 from Korean brands and 196,115 from Western brands, sourced from 12 databases. The results confirmed some things K-beauty fans have always claimed, challenged a few assumptions, and surfaced a handful of genuine surprises.
Methodology
We analyzed 258,695 products from HadaBuddy's database, drawn from 12 sources including regulatory filings, brand-provided ingredient lists, and retailer databases. "K-beauty" includes products from Korean-headquartered brands. "Western" includes products from brands headquartered in North America, Europe, and Australia. Japanese and other Asian brands were excluded to keep the comparison clean.
Each product's full INCI ingredient list was parsed and normalized. Ingredient frequency is expressed as the percentage of products in that category containing the ingredient at least once.
This is not a study of concentration or efficacy. Ingredient lists tell you what is in a product, not how much. But across tens of thousands of products, frequency patterns reveal genuine formulation philosophies.
Where K-beauty leads
The biggest differences were in functional ingredients that K-beauty has championed for years.

Adenosine: 5x more common in K-beauty
The single biggest gap. Nearly one in four K-beauty products contains adenosine, compared to fewer than one in twenty Western products. This is a direct result of Korea's regulatory system. The MFDS (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety) recognizes adenosine as a functional cosmetic ingredient for anti-wrinkle claims at concentrations as low as 0.04%. If a Korean brand wants to label a product "anti-wrinkle," adenosine is the easiest approved path. Clinical trials support its wrinkle-reducing effects through collagen stimulation and cellular energy support.1
Centella asiatica: 3x more common in K-beauty
Centella appeared in 23.1% of K-beauty products versus 7.8% of Western ones. This tracks with centella's deep roots in traditional Korean herbal medicine and its starring role in "cica" products. Research backs the enthusiasm: centella's active compounds (madecassoside, asiaticoside) promote collagen synthesis and wound healing.2 Western brands have started catching up (La Roche-Posay's Cicaplast line, for example), but the adoption gap remains wide.
Niacinamide: K-beauty adopted it first
Niacinamide appeared in 26.2% of K-beauty products compared to 16.3% Western. Korean brands were formulating with niacinamide years before The Ordinary made it a household name in Western skincare. The ingredient has strong evidence for improving skin barrier function, reducing hyperpigmentation, and regulating sebum production.3
Fermented ingredients: 2.4x more common
Fermented extracts (galactomyces, saccharomyces, bifida ferment lysate) appeared in 8.3% of K-beauty products versus 3.5% Western. Fermentation has centuries of history in Korean food culture, and K-beauty brands like SK-II and Missha built iconic products around fermented filtrates. Research suggests fermented ingredients can enhance antioxidant activity and improve skin penetration of beneficial compounds.4
Peptides, propolis, and mugwort
Peptides show up in 10.7% of K-beauty products (vs. 6.1% Western), reflecting Korea's investment in anti-aging actives beyond retinol. Propolis (2.7% vs. 1.0%) and mugwort (2.6% vs. 0.4%) are traditional K-beauty ingredients with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that have barely entered Western formulations yet.
Where Western skincare leads
The story is not one-sided. Several ingredients appear significantly more often in Western products.

Phenoxyethanol: the preservative gap
The largest single difference in our entire dataset. Phenoxyethanol appeared in 44.3% of Western products versus 19.6% of K-beauty products. This does not mean K-beauty is "preservative-free." Korean formulations tend to use alternative preservative systems (1,2-hexanediol, ethylhexylglycerin, or multi-compound blends) instead of relying as heavily on phenoxyethanol. Neither approach is inherently better or worse for safety. Phenoxyethanol is well-established as safe at cosmetic concentrations.5
Alcohol: different formulation philosophies
Alcohol (denatured) appeared in 67.5% of Western products compared to 48.4% of K-beauty products. It is important to note that "alcohol" in an ingredient list is broad. It includes fatty alcohols (cetyl, cetearyl) that are moisturizing, not just drying denatured alcohol. Still, the gap reflects a real trend: K-beauty brands have leaned into alcohol-free positioning, particularly in toners and essences, while Western formulations use alcohol more liberally for texture and penetration enhancement.
Mineral sunscreen filters: a regulatory story
Mineral sunscreen ingredients (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) appeared in 14.6% of Western products but only 1.7% of K-beauty products. This is almost entirely regulatory. Korea approves a wider range of chemical UV filters (like Tinosorb and Uvinul) that offer strong protection with lighter textures. Western markets, especially the US, have a much more limited set of approved chemical filters, so brands rely more heavily on mineral options. It is a regulatory difference, not a quality one.
Vitamin C, lactic acid, and green tea
Western skincare includes more vitamin C (13.2% vs. 8.9%), lactic acid (8.8% vs. 3.2%), and, perhaps surprisingly, green tea (6.9% vs. 1.1%). Green tea being more common in Western products was unexpected given its Asian origins, but it tracks with the popularity of antioxidant-forward lines from brands like Innisfree's Western competitors and the broad use of green tea extract as an antioxidant additive in Western formulations.
Sulfates and parabens: both declining
Both sulfates (5.0% vs. 1.2%) and parabens (5.0% vs. 2.5%) are more common in Western products, though both numbers are low overall. K-beauty moved away from these ingredients earlier, partly driven by Korean consumer demand for "free-from" formulations. The Western market followed, but the transition started later and is still playing out.
The surprising findings
K-beauty products contain 34% more ingredients
The average K-beauty product lists 34.2 ingredients. The average Western product lists 25.5. That is a substantial gap, and it reflects fundamentally different formulation strategies. Korean formulations tend to layer multiple functional ingredients at lower concentrations, creating complex multi-benefit products. Western formulations more often focus on fewer hero ingredients at higher concentrations. Neither approach is objectively superior, but it explains why K-beauty products often feel like they "do more" in a single step.
Fragrance is nearly identical
This one challenges the narrative. Fragrance appeared in 49.9% of K-beauty products and 46.6% of Western products. The difference is just 3.3 percentage points. Despite K-beauty's reputation for gentle, skin-first formulation, Korean products use fragrance at essentially the same rate as Western products. Hyaluronic acid is universal (but K-beauty uses more)
Hyaluronic acid is the single most common active ingredient across both markets. At 37.5% in K-beauty and 27.5% in Western products, it is everywhere. Its humectant properties are well-supported by research.6 The 10 percentage point gap likely reflects K-beauty's emphasis on hydration as a foundational skincare step.
What this means for your routine
This data does not say one market is better than the other. It says they are different, and knowing how lets you shop smarter.
If you want anti-aging without retinol irritation, K-beauty's adenosine and peptide density gives you more options. Almost a quarter of K-beauty products already include adenosine.
If you want strong chemical exfoliation, Western skincare offers more lactic acid and AHA-forward products. K-beauty tends to favor gentler approaches to exfoliation.
If you are building a K-beauty routine and want to understand what makes it different, look for centella, adenosine, fermented extracts, and allantoin. These are the ingredients where the formulation gap is widest.
If you want to avoid specific ingredients, the data helps set expectations. Looking for alcohol-free? You will have an easier time in K-beauty. Looking for mineral sunscreen? Western brands have far more options. Avoiding fragrance? Check every label no matter what, because both markets use it at roughly the same rate.

Is K-beauty really better than Western skincare?
Neither is categorically better. Our data shows they have different formulation philosophies. K-beauty uses more ingredients per product and leans heavily into soothing, hydrating, and anti-aging actives like centella, adenosine, and fermented extracts. Western skincare uses more exfoliating acids, mineral sun filters, and preservative systems like phenoxyethanol. The best routine for you depends on your skin type, concerns, and ingredient preferences.
Why does K-beauty use more ingredients per product?
Korean formulation philosophy favors layering multiple functional ingredients at lower concentrations in a single product. The average K-beauty product contains 34.2 ingredients versus 25.5 in Western products. This "multi-benefit" approach means each product targets several concerns simultaneously. Western brands more often formulate around one or two hero ingredients at higher concentrations.
Is K-beauty more natural than Western skincare?
Not exactly. K-beauty uses more botanical and fermented ingredients (centella, mugwort, propolis, galactomyces), which gives it a "natural" reputation. But K-beauty products also contain fragrance at nearly the same rate as Western products (49.9% vs. 46.6%). And "natural" does not automatically mean safer or more effective. Always check the actual ingredient list rather than relying on marketing claims.
Why do Western products use so much more phenoxyethanol?
Phenoxyethanol is a broad-spectrum preservative that Western brands have standardized around. K-beauty brands tend to use alternative preservative systems like 1,2-hexanediol and ethylhexylglycerin, often in combination. Both approaches are considered safe at cosmetic concentrations. The difference is formulation convention, not safety.
