The Most Common Skincare Ingredients Across 259,000 Products

We analyzed 259,000 beauty products. Here are the 20 most common ingredients and what the numbers mean for your routine.

I built HadaBuddy's database to help people scan their own products. I did not set out to map the entire skincare industry. But when you parse ingredient lists from 258,990 products across K-beauty and Western brands, patterns emerge that are hard to ignore.

Some confirmed what I expected. Others surprised me. A few challenged claims I had been repeating myself. Here are the 20 most common skincare ingredient families, how they split between Korean and Western products, and what the numbers mean for your routine.

The dataset and methodology

258,990 products with parsed ingredient lists as of June 2026. Sources: INCIDecoder, Hwahae, Ulta, Open Beauty Facts, EWG Skin Deep, SkinSort, YesStyle, and Jolse. The K-beauty subset is ~51,000 products; the remaining ~208,000 are predominantly Western brands.

Every product has been normalized against a standardized alias table that maps INCI names, brand-specific names, and common variations to canonical ingredient families. A product with both "tocopherol" and "tocopheryl acetate" counts once for the vitamin E family, not twice.

Average ingredients per product: 27.6 overall. K-beauty: 34.2. Western: 25.5. Korean brands layer multiple actives at lower concentrations; Western brands lean toward fewer ingredients at higher potency.

The 10 most common skincare ingredients

1. Alcohol: 62.9%

Nearly two-thirds of all products contain some form of alcohol. Before you panic: "alcohol" in INCI covers everything from drying denatured alcohol to fatty alcohols like cetyl and cetearyl alcohol, which are emollients that help skin retain moisture.1

K-beauty vs. Western: 48.4% vs. 67.5%. The gap reflects the Western market's heavier reliance on alcohol-based toners and mattifying formulations.

2. Fragrance: 47.3%

Nearly half of all products contain fragrance ("fragrance," "parfum," or specific aromatic compounds). The idea that Korean skincare avoids fragrance more than Western skincare? Not supported: 49.9% vs. 46.6%.

Fragrance is the most common cause of contact dermatitis from cosmetics.2 If your skin is reactive, filtering for fragrance-free eliminates roughly half the market.

3. Vitamin E (tocopherol): 42.9%

Vitamin E is the workhorse antioxidant of skincare, protecting skin barrier lipids from oxidative damage caused by UV and pollution.3 It also functions as a formula stabilizer, which partly explains its prevalence. Many products include tocopherol to preserve the formula rather than deliver a therapeutic skin benefit.

4. Phenoxyethanol: 38.3%

A preservative, not an active. It replaced parabens as the industry's preferred broad-spectrum preservative after the paraben backlash of the 2010s. Generally well-tolerated, though sensitization is possible at higher concentrations.4

The K-beauty vs. Western split is dramatic: 19.6% vs. 44.3%. Korean formulations tend to use alternative preservation systems (1,2-hexanediol and ethylhexylglycerin combinations), while Western brands defaulted to phenoxyethanol as a direct consequence of the "paraben-free" marketing wave.

5. Hyaluronic acid: 30.0%

Three in ten products contain some form of hyaluronic acid (including sodium hyaluronate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid). The most popular hydrating active in skincare, capable of holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water.5 Lower molecular weights penetrate the stratum corneum more effectively for deeper hydration.6

K-beauty leads: 37.5% vs. 27.5%, consistent with the Korean emphasis on hydration layering.

6. Niacinamide: 18.7%

Nearly 1 in 5 products contains niacinamide (vitamin B3). One of the broadest evidence bases in skincare: barrier repair, oil regulation, anti-inflammatory effects, and pigmentation reduction.7

K-beauty leads: 26.2% vs. 16.3%. Korea was using niacinamide for brightening years before Western brands adopted it around 2019.

7. Aloe: 16.6%

About 1 in 6 products. Used primarily for soothing and hydration, with some evidence for wound healing.8 Prevalence is likely inflated by formulations where it serves as a label claim rather than a functional concentration.

8. Allantoin: 15.3%

One of the most underappreciated ingredients in the database. A gentle soothing agent that promotes cell proliferation and wound healing,9 rarely discussed in consumer skincare despite appearing in 15% of products. K-beauty uses it more: 20.5% vs. 13.6%.

9. Vitamin C: 12.2%

About 1 in 8 products contain vitamin C (ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucoside, ethyl ascorbic acid, and other derivatives). Well-documented benefits for collagen synthesis and hyperpigmentation at 10% to 20% concentrations.10 The challenge is stability: many products use stabilized but less potent derivatives, and the ingredient's position on the list matters for whether you are getting a therapeutic dose or a marketing claim.

10. Centella asiatica: 11.6%

The ingredient that most clearly separates K-beauty from Western skincare: 23.1% vs. 7.8%. Clinical research supports centella's anti-inflammatory and barrier-repair properties.11 See centella asiatica benefits for skin for a deep dive.

Adenosine is the standout asymmetry: 1 in 4 Korean products vs. fewer than 1 in 20 Western. Korea's MFDS requires adenosine (or retinol) for anti-wrinkle claims, making it a baseline Korean ingredient.

Ceramides at 6.6% seems low for an ingredient that dominates barrier-repair marketing, but ceramide formulations are expensive and technically demanding. This figure represents genuine inclusion, not marketing claims.

Four findings that surprised me

Parabens are nearly gone

Only 4.4% still contain parabens. A decade ago, that number would have been north of 60%. The reformulation wave is essentially complete. The irony: the EU Scientific Committee concluded that methylparaben and ethylparaben are safe at cosmetic concentrations up to 0.4%.12 The market moved faster than the science warranted, but the move is done.

Fragrance has not declined

Despite "fragrance-free" becoming a selling point, 47.3% still contain fragrance. The conversation has shifted. The formulations have not.

K-beauty products are more complex

34.2 average ingredients vs. 25.5 for Western products. This is not a quality difference. It reflects a fundamentally different formulation philosophy. Korean chemists layer multiple actives at lower concentrations for a broader, gentler profile. Western formulations use fewer ingredients at higher potency. Neither approach is inherently better.

Retinoids are still rare

Only 4.3% of products contain any retinoid. Given how much airtime retinol gets in skincare media, this feels low. The explanation is practical: retinoids are unstable, require careful packaging, cause irritation in many users, and cannot be used during pregnancy. Brands include them in dedicated treatment products, not in the moisturizers and cleansers where the other top ingredients live.

What this means for your routine

Prevalence does not equal quality. But the data does tell you a few things:

The industry defaults are hydration and antioxidants. Vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and aloe cover the majority of products. If you use a basic moisturizer and sunscreen, you are probably already getting these.

Avoiding fragrance eliminates half the market. HadaBuddy flags fragrance automatically so you do not have to read every label.

K-beauty and Western skincare are converging, but distinct. The biggest divergences: adenosine (23.6% vs. 4.7%), centella (23.1% vs. 7.8%), phenoxyethanol (19.6% vs. 44.3%). Building a routine from both markets lets you find ingredients you would not encounter shopping in only one.

Actives are still the minority. Niacinamide (18.7%), vitamin C (12.2%), retinoids (4.3%), and exfoliating acids (7.4% salicylic, 2.6% glycolic) are each in well under a quarter of products. If you want actives, you need to seek them out.

How accurate is this data?

258,990 products from eight sources, matched with a standardized alias table ("tocopherol," "tocopheryl acetate," and "vitamin E" all count toward the same family). The main limitation: ingredient lists do not include concentrations. A product listing niacinamide at 0.1% and one at 10% both count the same way. Prevalence tells you what the industry uses. It does not tell you how much.

Which ingredient should I prioritize adding to my routine?

Niacinamide. It works for nearly every skin type, has minimal side effects, pairs with almost every other active, and has strong evidence for barrier repair, oil control, and pigmentation reduction.7 It is also affordable and widely available.

Is K-beauty actually better than Western skincare?

The data does not support a blanket "better" claim in either direction. K-beauty leads in soothing actives (centella, adenosine) and ingredient complexity. Western products lead in preservative simplicity and higher individual active concentrations. Choose based on your skin concerns, not brand origin. See is Korean skincare actually better?

Why is fragrance still in so many products if dermatologists recommend avoiding it?

Fragrance makes products feel luxurious, and most people tolerate it fine. The recommendation to avoid it is most relevant for eczema, rosacea, contact dermatitis, or generally reactive skin. For the rest of the market, fragrance sells. Brands respond to purchasing behavior, not Instagram discourse.
