Mugwort Extract
Plant extract with soothing and antioxidant properties.
What does Mugwort Extract do for skin?
Mugwort extract, derived primarily from Artemisia species, exerts its cosmetic effects through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant pathways. It contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids (e.g., eupatilin, jaceosidin), coumarins, and phenolic acids that can inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators (e.g., NF-κB, COX-2, TNF-α, IL-6) in skin cells, thereby reducing redness and irritation. Furthermore, its rich antioxidant profile helps scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), protecting the skin from oxidative stress and environmental damage.
Typical concentration: 0.1-5% (most formulas utilize 0.5-2% for anti-inflammatory and soothing benefits).
Is Mugwort Extract safe?
Mugwort extract is generally considered safe for topical cosmetic use. While there is no specific CIR Expert Panel assessment for Mugwort Extract, some individuals, particularly those with allergies to the Asteraceae/Compositae plant family, may experience mild sensitization or irritation.
