Formula
ZnO
Molecular Weight
81.38 g/mol
Also known as: CI 77947, Zinc White, Calamine (with iron oxide)
What does Zinc Oxide do for skin?
Inorganic UV filter that reflects and scatters UVA and UVB radiation via physical blocking. Broad-spectrum protection across 290-380 nm. Photostable (does not degrade under UV exposure). Astringent and antimicrobial properties via release of zinc ions. Anti-inflammatory action through inhibition of mast cell degranulation. Micronized and nano forms reduce white cast while maintaining efficacy.
Typical concentration: 2-25% (FDA maximum 25%)
Is Zinc Oxide safe?
FDA Category I sunscreen (GRASE). Does not penetrate beyond the stratum corneum even in nano form. Non-irritating. Safe for sensitive skin and children. Only 2 UV filters with confirmed GRASE status (along with titanium dioxide).

Can I mix Zinc Oxide with other ingredients?
Zinc can interfere with vitamin C absorption when layered directly. Apply vitamin C first and let it absorb before zinc-based products.
