What does Madecassoside do for skin?
Madecassoside, a triterpenoid saponin from Centella asiatica, exerts its effects primarily through anti-inflammatory, wound healing, and collagen-boosting pathways. It inhibits the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. Furthermore, it promotes fibroblast proliferation and enhances the synthesis of collagen types I and III, key components of the extracellular matrix, while also influencing hyaluronic acid production and improving skin barrier function, leading to improved skin repair and elasticity.
Typical concentration: 0.05-1% (most formulas use 0.1-0.5% for targeted benefits).
Is Madecassoside safe?
Madecassoside is generally considered safe and well-tolerated with a low potential for irritation or sensitization. As a purified component of Centella asiatica, which has a long history of safe use, it is not listed as a drug by the FDA and is positively assessed within the broader safety profile of Centella extracts by expert panels.
