What does Ceramide Ap do for skin?
Ceramide AP (N-stearoylphytosphingosine) is a key lipid component of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. It integrates into the intercellular lipid lamellae alongside other ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids, forming a highly organized, impermeable barrier. This lipid matrix is crucial for preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), maintaining skin hydration, and protecting the skin from external irritants, allergens, and microorganisms. By contributing to the structural integrity and barrier function, Ceramide AP helps restore and maintain healthy skin homeostasis.
Typical concentration: Often used at 0.001-0.2% as a component within a multi-ceramide complex, where the total ceramide concentration in formulations typically ranges from 0.05-1%.
Is Ceramide Ap safe?
Ceramide AP is considered safe for use in cosmetics. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed ceramides, including Ceramide AP, and concluded they are safe in the present practices of use and concentration. It is biomimetic and generally non-irritating and non-sensitizing, as it is a natural component of healthy skin.

General guidance
Ceramides are excellent after exfoliation. They repair and strengthen the skin barrier that acids temporarily weaken.
Both strengthen the skin barrier through different mechanisms. Together they're the ultimate barrier repair combo.
Ceramides help counteract retinoid dryness. Apply ceramide moisturizer after retinoid for better tolerance.
Glycolic acid + ceramides is a smart pairing. The acid exfoliates while ceramides immediately repair the barrier.
Centella and ceramides together are the ultimate barrier repair duo. Both soothe and strengthen damaged or sensitized skin.
Growth Factors
Ceramides create a protective barrier that helps growth factors stay active on the skin longer.
HA draws water in, ceramides lock it in. Apply HA on damp skin first, then ceramide moisturizer to seal.
Peptides
Peptides and ceramides are both gentle and reparative. A perfect combo for anti-aging without irritation.
