Ethylhexylglycerin

Skin conditioning agent and preservative booster. Ethylhexylglycerin is a multifunctional ingredient that acts primarily as a preservative enhancer and mild humectant/emollient. It works by reducing the interfacial tension at the cell membranes of microorganisms, disrupting their cell walls and enhancing the penetration of other antimicrobial agents, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth. Additionally, it helps to improve the feel of cosmetic formulations and provides mild emollient properties, contributing to skin conditioning.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that ethylhexylglycerin is safe as a cosmetic ingredient in current practices of use and concentration. It generally has a low potential for skin irritation or sensitization, though hypersensitivity reactions have been reported in rare, susceptible individuals.

Look for products with 0.3-1.0% (most formulas use 0.5-0.8%) for clinical efficacy.
