Dimethicone
A silicone that forms a protective barrier, smooths skin, and provides a silky feel.
What does Dimethicone do for skin?
Dimethicone functions primarily as an occlusive agent and film-former on the skin surface. It creates a breathable, hydrophobic barrier that reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by physically trapping moisture within the stratum corneum, thereby enhancing skin hydration and softness. This barrier also provides a protective layer against environmental irritants and imparts a smooth, silky feel to the skin by filling in fine lines and wrinkles and improving tactile properties.
Typical concentration: 1-30% (most cosmetic formulations use 1-15% for emollient and feel modification; for OTC skin protectant claims, 1-30% is typical).
Is Dimethicone safe?
Dimethicone is widely considered safe for cosmetic use. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed dimethicone as safe. It is an FDA-approved OTC skin protectant at concentrations of 1-30%. It is generally non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and non-comedogenic.
