Oxybenzone
UV filter that absorbs UVB and UVA rays.
What is Oxybenzone?
CAS Number
131-57-7
Formula
C14H12O3
Molecular Weight
228.24 g/mol
Also known as: Benzophenone-3, BP-3, 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone
What does Oxybenzone do for skin?
Absorbs both UVB (280-320 nm) and short UVA (320-350 nm) radiation. Functions as a photostabilizer for avobenzone in US formulations. Converts UV energy to heat via excited state intramolecular proton transfer. Detectable in blood after single application (systemic absorption exceeds FDA threshold of 0.5 ng/mL).
Typical concentration: Up to 6% (FDA maximum)
Is Oxybenzone safe?
Under FDA safety review (proposed GRASE status pending additional data). Banned in Hawaii and Key West due to coral reef toxicity concerns. Detectable in breast milk and urine. EWG rates as moderate hazard.
