Coconut Oil
Emollient that moisturizes and softens the skin.
What does Coconut Oil do for skin?
Coconut oil primarily acts as an emollient and occlusive agent due to its high content of saturated fatty acids, particularly lauric acid. It forms a protective lipid layer on the stratum corneum, reducing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and enhancing skin barrier function, thereby increasing hydration. Lauric acid also exhibits antimicrobial properties by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria like *Staphylococcus aureus* through its metabolite monolaurin. Furthermore, it may exert anti-inflammatory effects by modulating cytokine release and reducing oxidative stress.
Typical concentration: 5-100% (commonly used as a base oil in balms, creams, lotions, or as a standalone oil; often used at 10-50% in emulsions).
Is Coconut Oil safe?
Coconut oil is generally considered safe for topical cosmetic use. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed coconut oil and found it safe for use in cosmetics. It has a low potential for skin irritation or sensitization, though its comedogenicity is debated and can vary by individual.
