What does Cetearyl Alcohol do for skin?
Cetearyl Alcohol functions primarily as an emollient by forming a hydrophobic, occlusive film on the skin's surface. This film helps to reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) by reinforcing the integrity of the stratum corneum barrier, thereby enhancing skin hydration, smoothness, and suppleness. It also acts as an emulsifier and emulsion stabilizer in formulations, assisting in the blend of immiscible oil and water phases, and contributing to product texture and spreadability.
Typical concentration: 1-20% (commonly used at 2-10% in moisturizing creams, lotions, and conditioners)
Is Cetearyl Alcohol safe?
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed Cetearyl Alcohol, along with other fatty alcohols, and deemed it safe for use in cosmetic formulations. It is generally considered non-irritating and non-sensitizing, even for individuals with sensitive skin, and is frequently incorporated into hypoallergenic and barrier-supportive formulations.
