Castor Oil
Emollient that softens and moisturizes the skin.
What does Castor Oil do for skin?
Castor oil functions primarily as an emollient and humectant on the skin. Its high content of ricinoleic acid, a unique hydroxylated fatty acid, forms an occlusive film on the skin surface, which reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and helps maintain the integrity of the skin barrier. This film also provides a smooth feel and can attract moisture from the environment, further hydrating the stratum corneum. Additionally, it can act as a solvent and dispersant for other ingredients in cosmetic formulations.
Typical concentration: Castor oil is commonly used across a wide range of concentrations, typically from 1-100% depending on the product type. In lotions and creams, it might be found at 5-20%, while in lip balms, hair oils, or pure oil formulations, it can constitute 50-100% of the formula.
Is Castor Oil safe?
Castor oil is generally recognized as safe for cosmetic use. The CIR Expert Panel has assessed Castor Oil and found it safe, noting a low potential for irritation or sensitization in most individuals. It is not listed as a drug ingredient by the FDA.
