Beeswax
A natural wax that acts as an emollient and thickener, providing a protective barrier on the skin.
What does Beeswax do for skin?
Beeswax primarily functions as an occlusive agent by forming a hydrophobic protective film on the skin's surface. This physical barrier reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), thereby helping to maintain skin hydration and suppleness. It also acts as an emollient, smoothing and softening the skin. Its mechanism is physical barrier formation rather than interaction with specific receptors or pathways.
Typical concentration: 1-30% (commonly 2-10% in emulsions for emollient and stabilizing effects, up to 30% in solid stick formulations like balms and lip products).
Is Beeswax safe?
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed beeswax as safe for use in cosmetic formulations. It is generally well-tolerated with a low potential for irritation or sensitization, although individuals with allergies to bee products may react.
