272.25 g/mol

Also known as: 4-Hydroxyphenyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside, Alpha-Arbutin

What does Alpha Arbutin do for skin?

Glycosylated hydroquinone derivative that inhibits tyrosinase without the cytotoxicity of free hydroquinone. The alpha-glucoside bond provides 10x stronger tyrosinase inhibition than beta-arbutin. Reduces melanin synthesis by competing with L-DOPA at the tyrosinase active site. Does not release free hydroquinone under normal physiological conditions.

Typical concentration: 0.5-2% (most effective at 1-2%)

Is Alpha Arbutin safe?

Good safety profile. Non-cytotoxic unlike hydroquinone. CIR Expert Panel: safe up to 2% in leave-on products. No photosensitivity concerns.
