Xanthan Gum
Thickener and stabilizer that improves product texture and consistency.
What does Xanthan Gum do for skin?
Xanthan gum, a high molecular weight polysaccharide, functions primarily as a rheology modifier, thickener, and emulsion stabilizer in cosmetic formulations. It forms a pseudoplastic, viscous solution or gel matrix that effectively suspends insoluble particles, prevents phase separation in emulsions, and imparts desirable texture and spreadability to products. On the skin, it can form a subtle, non-occlusive film that contributes to moisture retention by mildly reducing transepidermal water loss and enhancing the sensory experience during product application.
Typical concentration: 0.1-2% (most formulas use 0.2-1%)
Is Xanthan Gum safe?
The CIR Expert Panel has assessed xanthan gum and concluded it is safe as a cosmetic ingredient in the present practices of use and concentration. It is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for food use and has a very low potential for skin irritation or sensitization.
