Witch Hazel
Astringent properties that can help tone and tighten skin.
What does Witch Hazel do for skin?
Witch Hazel extract exerts its cosmetic effects primarily through its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Its high tannin content, particularly hamamelitannin and gallotannins, interacts with epidermal proteins, causing temporary precipitation and tightening of pores, which contributes to an astringent and oil-reducing effect. Additionally, the extract's polyphenols and flavonoids modulate inflammatory pathways by inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators (e.g., leukotrienes, prostaglandins) and scavenging reactive oxygen species, thereby reducing skin redness, irritation, and oxidative damage.
Typical concentration: Typical usage in cosmetic formulations ranges from 5% to 20% of the distillate or extract for its soothing and astringent properties, though it can be used up to 100% in standalone toner products (often as a hydro-alcoholic distillate).
Is Witch Hazel safe?
Witch Hazel extract is generally considered safe for cosmetic use. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract and Distillate are safe in current practices of use and concentration. While generally well-tolerated, the alcohol content in some distillates can be drying or mildly irritating for sensitive skin, though its sensitization potential is low.
