Tamanu Oil
Emollient oil with potential anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
What does Tamanu Oil do for skin?
Tamanu oil, derived from Calophyllum inophyllum, exerts its cosmetic actions through several mechanisms. Its rich profile of fatty acids, coumarins (e.g., calophyllolide), xanthones, and triterpenes contributes to antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. Anti-inflammatory effects are mediated by inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators, such as those in the arachidonic acid pathway. Furthermore, it promotes skin regeneration and wound healing by stimulating collagen synthesis, fibroblast proliferation, and angiogenesis.
Typical concentration: 1-20% (often used at 5-10% as an active, or 100% as a pure oil)
Is Tamanu Oil safe?
Tamanu oil is generally well-tolerated, but sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis have been reported in some individuals, particularly those with existing sensitivities or tree nut allergies (due to potential cross-reactivity). There is no specific CIR Expert Panel assessment for Tamanu Oil as a whole ingredient. Not an FDA-approved drug ingredient.
