Pomegranate Extract
Contains antioxidants that help protect skin from environmental damage.
What does Pomegranate Extract do for skin?
Pomegranate extract exerts its cosmetic effects primarily through its rich content of polyphenols, particularly punicalagins and ellagic acid. These compounds act as potent antioxidants, scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting lipid peroxidation, thereby protecting skin cells from oxidative stress and UV-induced damage. Additionally, they demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties by modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes (e.g., COX-2), reducing skin redness and irritation. Some components may also promote collagen synthesis and inhibit collagenase, contributing to anti-aging benefits and improved skin elasticity.
Typical concentration: 0.1-5% (most formulas use 0.5-2% as an active ingredient for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties).
Is Pomegranate Extract safe?
Pomegranate extract is generally considered safe for topical application. It has a low potential for irritation or sensitization. The CIR Expert Panel has not specifically assessed 'Pomegranate Extract' as a distinct ingredient, but its individual constituents are well-studied.
