Peppermint Oil
Essential oil providing a cooling sensation and fragrance, with potential antimicrobial benefits.
What does Peppermint Oil do for skin?
Peppermint oil, primarily due to its menthol content, activates the transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) receptor on nerve endings in the skin. This activation leads to an influx of calcium ions, generating a cooling sensation by mimicking the effect of cold temperatures, without actually lowering skin temperature. Additionally, menthol may exert mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by modulating pain pathways and reducing inflammatory mediators, though the TRPM8 activation for cooling is its most prominent dermatological mechanism.
Typical concentration: 0.1-3% (most cosmetic formulations use <1% for fragrance or cooling effects due to potential for irritation at higher concentrations).
Is Peppermint Oil safe?
Peppermint oil can be a skin irritant and sensitizer, particularly at higher concentrations or in individuals with sensitive skin, potentially causing contact dermatitis. The CIR Expert Panel concluded that Mentha arvensis and Mentha piperita-derived ingredients are safe in the present practices of use and concentration when formulated to be non-sensitizing.
