Lavender Oil
A fragrant essential oil that can have soothing properties but may also be irritating.
What does Lavender Oil do for skin?
Lavender oil, primarily through its constituents linalool and linalyl acetate, exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 and inhibiting NF-κB pathways in skin cells, thereby reducing redness and irritation. It also possesses antioxidant properties, helping to protect skin from oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals. Furthermore, its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi may contribute to a healthier skin microbiome and assist in managing minor blemishes or irritations.
Typical concentration: 0.1-2% (most leave-on formulations use <1% due to fragrance and sensitization potential).
Is Lavender Oil safe?
The CIR Expert Panel concluded that Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil is safe in the present practices of use and concentration. However, it contains allergenic constituents (e.g., linalool, limonene) which can oxidize upon air exposure and cause contact sensitization in susceptible individuals.
