Keratin
케라틴
Protein that strengthens and repairs hair and nails.
What does Keratin do for skin?
Keratin, particularly hydrolyzed forms or peptides, functions in cosmetics primarily as a film-forming agent, humectant, and conditioning agent for the skin. It forms a protective, non-occlusive film on the skin surface, which helps to reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and improve skin hydration. By strengthening the skin's barrier function, it can contribute to a smoother and more resilient skin texture.
Typical concentration: 0.1-5% (typical formulations often use 0.5-2%)
Is Keratin safe?
Keratin and its hydrolyzed derivatives are generally recognized as safe for use in cosmetics. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed various keratin ingredients and found them safe as cosmetic ingredients. It has low potential for irritation or sensitization.
