What does Glutathione do for skin?
Glutathione, a tripeptide, functions as a potent antioxidant in the skin by directly neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals generated by UV radiation and environmental stressors, thereby preventing oxidative damage to cellular components. It also plays a crucial role in regenerating other antioxidants like Vitamin C and E. Additionally, glutathione is known to inhibit melanogenesis by directly interfering with tyrosinase activity and shifting the pathway of melanin synthesis from eumelanin (darker pigment) to pheomelanin (lighter pigment), contributing to skin brightening.
Typical concentration: 0.1-5% (most formulas targeting skin brightening often use 0.5-2%).
Is Glutathione safe?
Glutathione is generally considered safe for topical cosmetic use with no significant irritation or sensitization potential widely reported. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has not specifically assessed topical glutathione as a standalone ingredient, but it is a naturally occurring peptide essential for cellular function.
