What does Decyl Glucoside do for skin?
Decyl Glucoside, a non-ionic alkyl polyglucoside surfactant, functions by lowering the surface tension at the oil-water interface on the skin. Its amphiphilic structure, with a hydrophilic glucose head and hydrophobic decyl chain, allows it to solubilize and emulsify lipophilic impurities, dirt, and excess sebum, thereby facilitating their removal during rinsing. This mild action helps cleanse the skin effectively while minimizing disruption to the stratum corneum barrier, a common concern with harsher ionic surfactants.
Typical concentration: 2-30% (most formulas use 5-20% as a primary or co-surfactant in cleansers, shampoos, and body washes).
Is Decyl Glucoside safe?
The CIR Expert Panel assessed Decyl Glucoside and other alkyl glucosides as safe for use in cosmetics in their current practices of use and concentration. It is widely regarded as a mild, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing surfactant, making it suitable for sensitive skin types.
