Cyclomethicone
A volatile silicone that provides a smooth feel and evaporates quickly.
What does Cyclomethicone do for skin?
Cyclomethicone, a volatile cyclic siloxane, functions primarily through its physical properties rather than specific biological pathways or receptors in the skin. It possesses low surface tension, allowing for excellent spreadability and a smooth, non-tacky feel upon application. Its high volatility means it rapidly evaporates from the skin's surface, leaving behind other ingredients or a very thin, temporary film, thus acting as an effective carrier, solvent, and transient emollient that improves product aesthetics and sensory feel. It does not significantly penetrate the stratum corneum or exert direct biological effects on skin cells.
Typical concentration: 1-50% (most leave-on formulations for sensory enhancement use 2-15%, while anhydrous products like hair serums or antiperspirants may use higher concentrations as a primary carrier).
Is Cyclomethicone safe?
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that cyclomethicone is safe as used in cosmetic formulations. It is generally well-tolerated with low potential for skin irritation or sensitization.
