Caprylic Capric Triglyceride
Emollient and skin-conditioning agent derived from coconut oil and glycerin.
What does Caprylic Capric Triglyceride do for skin?
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride functions primarily as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent by forming a semi-occlusive film on the stratum corneum. This film physically impedes water evaporation, thereby reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and significantly increasing skin hydration. Its triglyceride structure allows it to smooth and soften the skin, reinforcing the lipid matrix of the skin barrier. Additionally, it serves as an effective solvent and vehicle for other lipophilic cosmetic ingredients, facilitating their dispersion and improving the overall spreadability and feel of formulations.
Typical concentration: 1-70% (commonly used at 5-25% as an emollient in emulsions, but can be a primary component in oil-based serums or anhydrous formulations up to 70% or more).
Is Caprylic Capric Triglyceride safe?
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and concluded it is safe for use in cosmetic formulations. It is generally well-tolerated, possessing a very low potential for skin irritation or sensitization.
