Calendula Extract
An extract from calendula flowers known for soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits.
What does Calendula Extract do for skin?
Calendula Extract exerts its cosmetic benefits primarily through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing mechanisms. Its rich composition of triterpenoids (e.g., faradiol monoester) and flavonoids (e.g., quercetin glycosides) can inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators such as cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β) and enzymes (e.g., COX-2), often by modulating NF-κB signaling pathways, thereby reducing skin redness and irritation. Furthermore, its antioxidant compounds scavenge reactive oxygen species, protecting skin cells from oxidative stress induced by environmental factors like UV radiation. It also promotes epidermal regeneration, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis, contributing to enhanced skin barrier function, soothing, and improved healing.
Typical concentration: 0.5-5% (many soothing and reparative formulations use 1-3%)
Is Calendula Extract safe?
The CIR Expert Panel assessed Calendula officinalis-derived ingredients as safe for use in cosmetics in 2011. It is generally well-tolerated with low irritation and sensitization potential, though individuals with known allergies to plants in the Asteraceae/Compositae family (e.g., ragweed, chamomile) may experience contact dermatitis.
