What does Benzyl Alcohol do for skin?
Benzyl alcohol primarily functions as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative in cosmetic formulations. Its mechanism involves disrupting the cell membranes of microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, and molds), leading to increased permeability and leakage of intracellular components. Additionally, it can denature microbial proteins and enzymes, inhibiting vital cellular processes and ultimately preventing the growth and proliferation of microbes, thus protecting the cosmetic product from spoilage.
Typical concentration: 0.5-1.0% (commonly used as a preservative; regulatory limits, such as in the EU, specify a maximum of 1% when used as a preservative).
Is Benzyl Alcohol safe?
The CIR Expert Panel concluded that benzyl alcohol is safe as used in cosmetic formulations. While generally well-tolerated, it is recognized as a potential sensitizer and allergen for some individuals, particularly in leave-on products or at higher concentrations, and is listed among the EU's regulated fragrance allergens.
