Bentonite
Clay that absorbs excess oil and impurities from the skin.
What does Bentonite do for skin?
Bentonite, a natural clay primarily composed of montmorillonite, functions in cosmetics as an absorbent, rheology modifier, and opacifying agent. On the skin, its layered structure and high surface area allow it to adsorb excess sebum, impurities, and toxins from the skin surface, contributing to cleansing and mattifying effects, particularly beneficial for oily or acne-prone skin. It can also form a physical film on the skin, contributing to texture and feel while potentially offering a mild protective barrier. Its colloidal properties allow it to swell in water, increasing viscosity and providing desired texture and stability to formulations.
Typical concentration: 1-25% (often 5-15% in absorbent masks; 0.5-5% as a rheology modifier)
Is Bentonite safe?
Bentonite is generally considered safe for use in cosmetics. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed bentonite and found it safe under current practices of use. It is largely non-irritating and non-sensitizing.
