Argan Oil
Emollient that softens and moisturizes the skin.
What does Argan Oil do for skin?
Argan oil functions primarily through its rich composition of essential fatty acids (oleic and linoleic acid), tocopherols (Vitamin E), polyphenols, and squalene. These components work synergistically to enhance skin barrier function by replenishing intercellular lipids, thereby reducing transepidermal water loss and maintaining hydration. The high concentration of tocopherols and polyphenols provides potent antioxidant activity, neutralizing free radicals generated by environmental stressors and mitigating oxidative damage to skin cells. Linoleic acid is a key precursor to ceramides, further supporting barrier integrity, while its anti-inflammatory properties may help soothe skin.
Typical concentration: 1-100% (often used at 2-20% in emulsions or as a pure oil for direct application).
Is Argan Oil safe?
Argan oil is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for topical use, with a low potential for irritation or sensitization. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, particularly in individuals with severe tree nut allergies, although argan is botanically a fruit. It is used as a cosmetic ingredient and is not regulated as a drug by the FDA.
